South Plaza
South Plaza Island was formed by geological uplift that was uneven in nature, resulting in an unusual landscape of cliffs on the south side and low-lying shores to the north. This central island is the only one where the territories and breeding seasons of land and marine iguanas overlap, which has led to interbreeding and the presence of hybrid iguanas.
South Plaza is also known for its distinct plants, carpeted in the Galápagos carpet weed which changes color with the seasons.
Highlights

Wildlife
- Land and marine iguanas roam the island, and the hybrid species of their interbreeding
- Significant populations of Galápagos sea lions can be found on the island
- Birdlife includes red-billed tropicbirds, swallow-tailed gulls, Nazca boobies and frigatebirds

Unique Flora
Sesuvium, also known as Galápagos carpet weed, adapts to its environment in a very clever way. During the dry season, it survives by losing the majority of its chlorophyll, causing the plant to absorb less light and turns red, orange and purple tones. This contrasts with green prickly pear cactus and white lichen rocks for a stunning vista. Once the rains begin, it returns to producing regular levels of chlorophyll and turns green once again.
The other notable plant on South Plaza island is the Prickly Pear Cactus. These photogenic cactus forests are vital food sources for many animals including land iguanas and cactus finches.

Activities

Best time to visit
During the rainy season, December to May, the flora is lush green but in the dry season, June to November, the colors change to spectacular red, orange and purple tones.
