San Cristóbal

down arrow Scroll to content

San Cristóbal is the easternmost island made up of four fused volcanoes, and boasts white sand beaches where playful sea lions hang out. The town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the capital of the archipelago with daily flights connecting it to the mainland. With bars and restaurants on the waterfront, it is a great place to stay and has recently become a surfing hotspot.

The island is home to iguanas, giant tortoises, frigatebirds, mockingbirds and many other species. It also protects the last of a critically endangered flower called the Calandrinia Galapagosa.

History

San Cristóbal has some interesting history, being the island where Charles Darwin first went ashore in 1835. A small lake called El Junco serves as the only source of permanent fresh water in the archipelago- a resource which led to the early settlement of San Cristóbal and the development of an agricultural center which produced leather from feral cattle, and fish and tortoise oil.

In 1880, a penal colony was built on the island, with Manuel Cobos (the owner) treating convicts as slaves on the island's sugar plantation. He was eventually assassinated by a group of his workers in 1904, and the prisoners escaped.
