02 Isabela Island Caleta Tagus

This seahorse-shaped island is home to more wild tortoises than all the other islands combined, with a separate species on each of its six volcanoes. On Isabela, you can go on hiking excursions and spot an unmatched level of wildlife including penguins, iguanas and flamingos. The nutrient-rich waters also make it the best place to see whales with 16 species being spotted around the island.

The sleepy port of Puerto Villamil, peppered with bars and restaurants, is a starting point for many tours and day excursions. With white sands and swaying palm trees hugging the coastline, Villamil truly is one of the Galápagos Islands' most beautiful towns.

Highlights

Chaski 03.25 Puerto Villamil Isabela Island

History

Isabela is the largest of all the islands and was formed by the joining of six volcanoes, five of which are still active today. Tagus Cove was once a popular anchorage for pirates and whalers - to this day you can still see the mark they left on the rock formations.

Puerto Villamil, the main town, is the center of the islands' population, with the majority of residents making their living by fishing, farming and tourism. The town was founded in 1893 by Antonio Gil and was named after the freedom fighter from Guayaquil, José de Villamil.
