02 Espinoza Point

Fernandina is the westernmost island in the Galápagos Islands and is the most volcanically active, sitting at the center of the hot spot that created the archipelago. Its name was given to honor King Fernando of Spain, who sponsored the voyage of Christopher Columbus.

Fernandina has a large land iguana population and, due to the cold upwelling of the Cromwell Current, the waters surrounding Fernandina are the richest in the Galápagos. These cold waters also provide prime habitat for both flightless cormorants and Galápagos penguins.
